Organic Light-Emitting Diode, better known as OLED is a display technology that is renowned for achieving pitch black. The display consists of pixels that contain an organic carbon-based film that is placed between 2 conductors. When current passes through the conductors, it emits light. This process takes place on every single pixel, which makes the organic pixels self-emissive, each pixel generates its own light.
There are two different types of OLED technologies; the Active-Matrix OLED (AMOLED) and the Passive-Matrix OLED (PMOLED). The AMOLED variant requires electronics to switch individual pixels on and off. This yields a better deep black display, thereby producing better display qualities. Owing to this quality, the AMOLED variant of OLED technology is the most prevalent OLED display technology in the market today. Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips, Toshiba and Panasonic are using the technology to produce TVs.
Advantages Of OLED Technology
The technology makes TV sets lighter. Since OLED display technology does not require a separate backlight to illuminate the pixels, OLED TVs tend to be lighter and thinner.
The technology produces better picture quality. Each individual pixel can be switched on and off individually. This makes it easier for the TV to achieve better contrast ratios and perfect black, which combine for better picture quality. Additionally, these qualities make the viewing angle wider.
